Ship's History
The Akira class starship, the USS Defiance was commissioned in 2370, just before the onset of the Dominion Wars under the command of Captain Nathan Jester. After her successful and uneventful year long shakedown cruise the war had begun and she was thrown into combat with the seventh fleet, a massive 107 ship strong group of Klingon and Federation ships. This fleet was the subject of an elaborate ambush by Dominion forces and the Defiance was one of the 14 ships to make it back to Federation lines. She was heavily damaged and her Captain was killed. Commander Samuel Meriod stepped up to take command and saw the Defiance and the other 14 ships back to the shipyards of Carson 5.
The Defiance underwent massive repairs after the attack at the Orbital Shipyards of Mars, Utopia Planitia. There, Meriod supervised the repairs and was given a long awaited promotion to Captain and command of the Defiance. After her repair she was put back into combat with the ninth fleet under Admiral Ross. She participated in some of the most eventful battles in the war. The destruction of the Dominions main shipyard, the retaking of Deep Space Nine, the fight for the Chintoka System, the first battle with the Breen in which she saved many officers of the doomed USS Defiant and finally the last battle of the War, The Battle of Cardassia Prime.
After the War had ended, The Defiance was recalled to Utopia Planita to have most of her crew reassigned and a new one established. All of her crew except the captain and first officer were sent to new ships, while the two remaining officers were given the task of creating a completely new type of ship, with a new mission and a new objective.
The war had taken its toll on the Federation, and they could not afford to be put into a situation where it might happen again. Starfleet Command was given the authorisation of the President of the Federation to put together a new type of ship, one that could do the work that the politicians could not. She would have her public side, and a private side, a group of covert intelligence agents that would perform missions to prevent another war and to ensure the safety of the Federation and her people. Yet with these missions they would receive no awards and no accolades, for they did not exist and never happened. A black ops ship, armed with the best equipment and the best people. She was the first starship with the mission, the knowledge and the confidence to defy any who opposed the Federation.
